~ Anger when Riley gets served broccoli on pizza |
Anger is a major character in the 2015 Disney/Pixar animated feature film Inside Out, and one of the deuteragonists of its 2024 sequel. He is the shortest, but most violent and hot-headed of Riley Andersen's five original emotions.
He is voiced by comedian Lewis Black.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
Inside Out[]
- He cares very deeply about things being fair as well as seeking justice.
- After the first day in San Francisco ended up disappointing Riley and her Emotions, Anger and the other Emotions suggested to Joy that she let them handle it.
- When Mrs. Andersen asked Riley to be happy to cheer up her father, Anger, along with Fear, Disgust and Sadness agreed to follow her request.
- When Sadness accidentally made Riley cry in front of the class, Anger and the other emotions start to panic and attempt to help Joy get rid of the sad memory.
- When Joy and Sadness literally get lost in Riley's mind, he, Fear and Disgust had to keep Riley's head on straight before they get home.
- He and the Emotions that remained in Headquarters tried to be happy and keep Riley's new life in San Francisco stable.
- He suggested returning to Minnesota to create new Core Memories there, and while his idea of running away to Riley's old home was risky, in Anger's defense he took the stance that returning to their old life was best for Riley.
- When he realized that the idea of fleeing to Minnesota was too dangerous, Anger tried to take out the idea light bulb that he inserted into the Console.
- He also showed that, despite having crossed the line of no return, he cares about Riley and wants the best for her, and that's why he, Disgust, and Fear tried to get the light bulb out.
- He tried to get Riley to react, but as she was left inoperative, he realized what a terrible mistake he made.
- When Joy and Sadness returned to Headquarters, he helped them enter by burning a hole in the window.
- He, Fear, and Disgust begged Joy to fix Riley's problem, although to their surprise she tasked Sadness with saving Riley.
- After Joy and Sadness restored Riley's mental health, he and all emotions accepted Sadness as an equally important emotion for Riley.
Dream Productions[]
- When Riley was in a sleepwalking state because of Paula Persimmon and Xeni, he tried to wake her up, although his attempt failed.
- He called on the then head of Dream Productions, Jean Dewberry, not to repeat another act of sleepwalking in Riley, and that he would take action if, something similar to what happened, happened again, which ended up happening when he demoted Jean from her position after she approved filming a nightmare that would have been detrimental to Riley and would have caused her to not want to attend the school dance.
Inside Out 2[]
- While he had an opposite and repellent relationship towards Fear to the point of attacking and hitting him in the first movie, he subverts this trait in the second movie, only punching him when Fear asked someone to do so to see if it was real or a dream.
- He, along with Sadness, Fear, and Disgust, helped Joy send negative memories of Riley to the back of her mind.
- When they were kicked out of Headquarters and locked in the Vault, Anger used the dynamite that Pouchy offered them to escape from the Vault.
- Along with Joy, Fear, and Disgust, Anger traveled through Riley's mind to regain her old Sense of Self, which was expelled by Anxiety to the Back of the Mind.
- When the Stream of Consciousness began flowing foods Riley didn’t like, he remained focused on their goal, insisting Disgust to get on the broccoli for them to ride on.
- When the Sar-Chasm was formed, he and Disgust helped Joy carry her to solid ground.
- After he, Fear, and Disgust were complaining to the point of angering Joy and she became discouraged, Anger lifted her spirits and comforted her.
- He devised using the memory vacuum cleaner so that he, Joy, Fear and Disgust would climb on top of the Long Term Memory shelves and easily find the Back of the Mind.
- After getting to the memory office, he joined Joy in encouraging the mind workers to rebel against Anxiety's orders, eventually succeeding and loosening Anxiety's control.
- He suggested a projection of Riley giving flowers for the losing team, showing that he cares about justice.
- He was shocked Anxiety was making Riley trespass in Coach Roberts’ office, showing he’s learned his lesson of causing Riley to do questionable acts after he made her steal her mother’s credit card.
- He also later acknowledges Riley has her faults and can sometimes do the wrong thing.
- He had the idea to call Pouchy to help the emotions get to Headquarters using several sticks of dynamite and a detonator to use the negative memories to go faster to Riley's Belief System.
- Anger, along with the new and core Emotions, removed the sense of self created by Anxiety so that Joy would restore Riley's old Sense of Self.
- He and the original emotions made peace with the new emotions and began working together with them.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Anger has a fiery spirit and tends to explode (literally) when things don't go as planned. He is also somewhat short-tempered, cantankerous, rude at times, impatient, and easily enraged, and always wants to use profanity.
- When he punched Fear when he asked to be pinched, he smiled slightly, showing that he sometimes enjoys making his purple companion suffer (although not as much as he did in the first movie).
- He tried to stop Ennui from using her phone to check on Riley, and although he reluctantly accepted her validity, he only did so because Joy reminded him that she learned the lesson that all Emotions are valid.
- He provoked Joy into exploding at him, Fear and Disgust by complaining and calling her delusional. He also smirks during her outburst.
- He turns out to be quite vengeful, as seen when Joy planned to make peace with Anxiety, he wanted to kick her into the Memory Dump; or when he offered to infiltrate the Headquarters to surprise Anxiety and take it out at her. Also when the Mind Police officers arrived at the Fort Pillowton to capture the Emotions, the first thing Anger did when he saw them was to want to fight them.
Trivia[]
