~ Alphys. |
Alphys is the tritagonist of the well-known indie title, Undertale.
She is the Royal Scientist of the Underground, having taken this role after W.D. Gaster. Unlike most monsters, Alphys is friendly to the protagonist from the very beginning, although hides some dark secrets. She has a crush on Undyne, and can become her girlfriend depending on the ending.
Her Good Ranking[]
What Makes Her Admirable?[]
- Was mentioned to be a big sister figure to Bratty and Catty in the past.
- Gave a ghost a physical body that would turn him into the Underground's biggest star, Mettaton.
- Despite the situation with the Amalgamates being incredibly messed up, she did not want them to turn into horrible creatures and has deep remorse for it, to the point of suicidal thoughts.
- Helps Frisk go forward throughout Hotland and the CORE so they could confront Asgore and reach the Barrier, allowing them to return to the surface.
- Despite manipulating Frisk, she makes it clear she doesn't actually want to hurt them and is terrified and guilty whenever that happens. She only does so to "stop" Frisk, therefore fulfiling her goal without harming them.
- Upon Mettaton turning on her, she would help the player defeat him by mentioning the switch on his back.
- In the True Pacifist Run, she freed the Amalgamates and allowed them to reunite with their families.
- Helps Frisk defeat Flowey/Asriel in the True Pacifist Run.
- In the Genocide Run, she evacuates the monsters after the player kills Undyne. Given that the Underground has around 10,000 citizens and we can only kill around 200 (possibly more or less), this means she saved hundreds, if not thousands of lives.
- It's also implied she hid them in the True Lab, where the Amalgamates are, implying she faced her own fears to do what's right.
- In the Queen Alphys ending, she becomes the new ruler of the Underground and leads them towards a new future. She is also grateful to Sans for helping her out in her duties, regarding him as a "great guy".
- While she does admit in the Queen Alphys ending that she should have killed the protagonist when given the chance before abruptly ending the call, she's saying this to a person who killed hundreds of people, including her crush and best friend, so this is justified.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- She has a consistent track record of lying to gain approval, for example she became the Royal Scientist through lying to Asgore about creating a SOUL and even if it was not her intention she still didn't tell Asgore that she was lying and instead opted to keep the job instead. That said, she feels deep remorse for it so this is a minor prevention.
- She puts the player in mortal danger in Hotland just so she can manipulate them into being her friend. While she didn't want to outright hurt them, it was still a reckless and selfish decision.
- While she did not intend to create the Amalgamates and frees them in the True Pacifist Run, she still kept them hidden from their families for a long time (ranging from weeks to months if not more), and while some of her dialogue suggests she was scared of ruining their families and tearing them apart, other dialogue suggests she didn't want to face the consequences and that she freed them to be honest with herself, making her motives partially, if not mostly selfish.
- While she does redeem her act of isolating the Amalgamates in the True Pacifist route, and potentially one of the Neutral Endings, she does not redeem this act in other routes, and while she does feel remorse across every route, she does not make up for her actions in a majority of them.
Trivia[]
- At one point, she was considered Near Pure Good, however it was decided that her preventions were too severe and was removed before being approved as IA.
