Allan Red is the deuteragonist of the adult animated comedy series Smiling Friends. He is an employee at the titular charity company Smiling Friends Inc., but is not particularly enthusiastic about doing his job, or anything for that matter. He is usually seen doing office and inventory work at the company, but occasionally will go on missions.
He's voiced by the series' co-creator, Michael Cusack.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- In "Desmond's Big Day Out," he consoles an injured, crying bliblie who stole his cheese, insisting that everything will be ok and calmy asking for his cheese back.
- In "Frowning Friends," he tries to help Mr. Boss during a mental breakdown and asks if he is alright.
- In "Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition DX 4K (Anniversary Director’s Cut)", Allan helps Pim get Gwimbly back into the spotlight, and eventually succeeds in helping him move on from his past. He also holds him back from fighting the IGBG CEO.
- Notably, in "A Allan Adventure", Allan embarks on a ridiculous quest to simply retrieve paperclips on behalf of Mr. Boss. This results in the following:
- Him helping a store owner named Plilford discover the usefulness of his nose, thereby reviving his business and making him ecstatic.
- Chasing after DJ Spit by leaping off of a building and grabbing onto his helicopter, braving an explosive battle with the US military and a crash in the forest in the process, all the while simply trying to get Mr. Boss's paperclips.
- Trying to retrieve the paperclips from Bigfoot, and then later chases after the crew of skeleton pirates on a raft and later makeshift waterskis, ultimately retrieving the paperclip box and leaving the crew dead.
- Finally, he discovers that the mastermind behind the adventure was his landlord (referred to as Mr. Landlord), who threatens to blow up the entire city if Allan doesn't hang out. Allan initially tried to simply knock him out for the paperclips, but in order to prevent the suicide bombing, he hung out with Mr. Landlord instead. Later, he uses a paperclip to disable the bomb, preventing him from destroying the city and killing it's population.
- In "The Magical Red Jewel (aka Tyler Gets Fired)", Allan helps Mr. Boss by looking after his son, Jason. He's shown to genuinely care about doing this at the end, as he somberly tells Mr. Boss that his son had died, and when it turns out to be false, he is relieved that he and Charlie "didn't kill the baby" while hugging him.
- In "Pim Finally Turns Green", Mr. Boss reveals that Allan had constructed rocket boots for him, capable of launching him to the moon, which made him very happy. Initially, Allan didn't feel the need to take credit for this, implying he did it simply out of altruism.
- In general, Allan can be a pretty good friend to his fellow coworkers and he does care about them, often hanging out with them and showing affability. He also cares about Mr. Boss.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's an anti-hero, as he only works at Smiling Friends Inc. for personal gain - he leaves at one point to join a malevolent organization (the Frowning Friends) simply because they have a better 401k. He also embarked on the quest for paperclips mainly because Mr. Boss promised him a reward.
- He's a hero by proxy because, despite having standards against evil and genuinely wanting to stop Mr. Landlord, he only found himself fighting against him because he needed to retrieve the paperclips, remarking at one point that he was "just trying to do his job" and would otherwise be a neutral character.
- He's frequently a jerk to others, even his coworkers, and can be callous, amoral, selfish, and inconsiderate.
- In "Frowning Friends," as mentioned before, he joins the titular organization, dedicated to spreading nihilism and misery, simply because they had a better retirement plan. He becomes an enforcer for them and even arrests Pim and Charlie on their orders.
- In "Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition DX 4K (Anniversary Director’s Cut)", he is completely reluctant and unempathetic in helping Gwimbly revive his career; he began the episode by spraying the titular character with dirty brown water just because he was a homeless person loitering outside the office. The entire episode, Allan tries to find the easy way out, as if they were just looking to find a place for him to sleep (such as asking Count Groxia if Gwimbly can just crash at his place, even though the plan was to have him return as his video game villain), rather than looking to rejuvenate him entirely. He also refers to Gwimbly's franchise as "stupid," and later suggests he just sleep beside Mr. Millipede's grave while Gwimbly is mourning his friend's death.
- In the same episode, he kicks the tiny IGBG receptionist in the face, clearly knocking her out and possibly killing her by doing so, his justification being that he was startled.
- In "A Allan Adventure," he rejects the gift that Mr. Boss gives him at the end of the episode right to his face, unappreciative of it without even considering his employer's feelings.
- In the same episode, he starts heating up after being swallowed by the leviathan and begins stabbing its insides with the skeleton pirate's cutlass, causing it to bleed. While the creature had swallowed him, it is likely an amoral predator, and Allan is simply taking his anger out on it rather than doing it out of self-defense, as he simply laments about how his quest is being interrupted while doing it.
- In "Erm, the Boss Finds Love?" he backs out of helping Pim and Charlie kill Brittney because he has a "Dr. Monster" appointment, something that he never warned them about or clarified even after, leaving them alone on the mission to save their boss.
- In "The Magical Red Jewel (aka Tyler Gets Fired)", Allan accuses Charlie of letting Jason die and calls him a "yellow son of a bitch" before the two get into a fight. He's also a hypocrite here, as Charlie correctly points out that he was the only one trying to think of a solution whereas Allan did nothing.
