Alex Mason is one of the protagonists of the Call of Duty: Black Ops sub-series.
He is a U.S. Marine and CIA operative who was brainwashed to be a sleeper agent, but was reprogrammed by Viktor Reznov to enact his revenge on Nikita Dragovich, Lev Kravchenko, and Friedrich Steiner. After stopping Dragovich from destroying the West, Mason continued to serve the CIA to stop terrorist threats, such as the rogue Soviet spy "Perseus" and his spy network. During his operations in the 1980s, Mason and his close friend, Frank Woods, would become the enemies of Raul Menendez, who wanted to get revenge on them for the death of his sister.
In Black Ops and Black Ops II, he was voiced and motion captured by Sam Worthington. In Black Ops: Declassified, he was voiced by Nolan North, who also voiced Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series. In Black Ops Cold War, he was voiced by Chris Payne Gilbert.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
Call of Duty: Black Ops[]
- In Cuba during the Bay of Pigs operation, Mason stayed behind to clear a path for his comrades, Woods, Carlos and Bowman, allowing them to escape Cuba unharmed while also letting himself get captured by Cuban soldiers.
- In Vorkuta, he promised to Reznov that he would help him kill Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Steiner for what they had done to Reznov 18 years prior.
- Alongside his friend Reznov and many other prisoners at Vorkuta, they led a riot among the prisoners and allow them to break free from the gulag. Thanks to both of them, many prisoners escaped from the gulag where they were tortured and beaten.
- When the Numbers tried to force Mason into killing President Kennedy upon having a meeting with him, he managed to resist it and avoid his urge to killing JFK.
- Alongside Woods and Bowman, he managed to rescue Grigori Weaver who was been tortured and mutilated by Lev Kravchenko.
- Destroyed a Soyuz 2 rocket in mid-air with a Valkyrie rocket, preventing the Soyuz from killing more innocent people.
- Along with his team, he went to hunt down Dragovich to eliminate him but had failed due to Dragovich already fleeing the area.
- Helped escort a wounded Jason Hudson to safety during the Khe Sahn invasion, which Hudson pointed out wasn’t his mission or obligation to do so while interrogating Mason.
- Stayed behind to help Woods and his soldiers defend the Khe Sanh base from North Vietnamese soldiers, successfully repelling enemy forces.
- Attempted to rescue a Soviet defector from Hue City. Although the defector was killed, he still recovered a dossier from his room containing Dragovich’s associates and gave it to the CIA.
- Discovered that the Soviets and the Viet Cong were working together upon finding documents pointing to this in Kravchenko’s base.
- When he saw Bowman getting taken by Spetsnaz operatives, he had tried to shoot them, only for the gun to be out of ammo.
- Convinced Woods to play Russian roulette when captured by the Spetsnaz, and when it was Mason's turn to shoot himself, he pointed the gun at the Vietnamese soldiers and killed them all so him and Woods could escape.
- Freed other MACV-SOG soldiers who were captured and attempted to kill Kravchenko for his atrocities.
- Confronted and killed Steiner at Rebirth Island to prevent him from unleashing Nova 6, even while it was more for his own personal revenge.
- Thanks to his knowledge on the Numbers, he helped Hudson and Weaver locate Dragovich by telling them Dragovich's new base of operations was on the Rusalka, allowing them to put an end to Dragovich's plans once and for all and prevent him from weaponizing Nova 6 and using the numbers to order brainwashed Americans to unleash Nova 6 on the United States. This had also prevented the US President from authorizing a strike against the USSR.
- Expresses disgust towards Dragovich brainwashing him to turn him against his own country, and killing his own president right before he kills Dragovich.
Call of Duty Black Ops: Declassified[]
- Saved Woods from Vietnam after he heard he was still alive after his fight with Kravchenko.
- Completed several CIA missions which included stopping KGB spy Mikhail Belov.
Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War[]
- Helped Russell Adler assassinate Iranian terrorists Qasim Javadi and Arash Kadivar. He also has the option to spare and capture Qasim instead of killing him.
- Helped Adler and his team stop Perseus from launching "Operation Greenlight" which would mean activating several nukes around Europe and lead to problems between the USSR and the West. This can be successful if the "Final Countdown" mission is selected instead of "Ashes to Ashes".
- After finding out Perseus was looking for a board of operatives tied to the Numbers, he went to the Yamantu facility alongside Woods to collect the mainframe, only to find out Perseus had erased it.
- In the side missions "Operation Chaos" and "Operation Red Circus", he can eliminate two Soviet spies known as Robert Aldrich and Vadim Rudnik, preventing them from infiltrating Europe and the U.S.
- Helped Adler's team find a scientist named Theodore Hastings in Havana.
- Along with Woods, he managed to rescue a brainwashed Adler from Viktor "Stitch" Kuzim and used his knowledge on the Numbers to free him from the programming. He then helped him find and stop Stitch.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II[]
- Stopped being in the CIA for almost a decade to spend more time with his son, David, even if they had a bit of a rocky relationship.
- Went to Angola to rescue Woods from Menendez, and also helped Hudson and Jonas Savimbi fight the MPLA.
- At the beginning of the "Pyrrhic Victory" mission, he tries to save a UNITA soldier from burning to death only for Savimbi to tell him that it was too late for him.
- Went to Afghanistan to help the Mujahdeen defend their base by destroying tanks and helicopters with a rocket launcher during the battle in exchange for information on Menendez’s whereabouts.
- When Kravchenko is being interrogated, he can resist the Numbers asking him to kill him, which will end up with Kravchenko giving vital information that Menendez has contacts in the CIA.
- When they find Menendez in Nicaragua, Mason tries to prevent Woods from killing him due to the latter's hatred for Menendez, even though Woods still managed to throw a grenade and accidentally kill Josefina.
- If he survived his gunshot, while he goes into hiding, being absent for most of his son’s life, it was most likely to keep Menendez’s hands off of David, so David wouldn’t be endangered as leverage. (Non canon)
- If he survived the gunshot in Panama, he returns to make peace with his son, David, telling him he’s proud of him. (Non canon)
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is too lethal and anti-heroic to be NPG, as he kills his enemies in very brutal ways and can also very wrathful towards his enemies (even if there are those like Dragovich who deserve it). He's also a CIA spy and hitman, which is also too mitigating for NPG.
- He has a bit of a harsh and cold relationship with his son David, being very distant and not doing much with him. However, he still deeply cares about him and even retired from the CIA to spend time with him.
