Alex Hopper is the main protagonist of the 2012 sci-fi naval action film Battleship.
He is the arrogant and young brother of Commander Stone Hopper, who had to control his behavior issues until his unfortunate death. He served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy, now Lieutenant Commander after the Battle of Hawaii against the aliens to which he received a Silver Star and the Navy Cross in tribute to his late brother.
He was portrayed by Taylor Kitsch.
His Good Ranking[]
What Makes Him Admirable?[]
- He shows care to Samantha Shane in the following:
- He impressed her by bringing her a chicken burrito in under five minutes as he assured her; she was the daughter of Admiral Terrence Shane of the United States Navy.
- He called her after getting news of his potential boot from the Navy, comforting her and telling her he won't make mistakes anymore, despite the statement aging pretty well.
- He captured information provided by her regarding the Beacon Project's hostile initiation to transmit towards Planet G again, which is later crucial to the end of the battle with the Mighty Mo against the Regent Mothership in the climax, as well to assure her to get out of the site before its destruction.
- He genuinely tries to impress and win his team and redeem himself as worthy of leadership and courage by choosing for the penalty kick, despite being injured, in which he unfortunately failed.
- He immediately tries to avenge his brother upon the obliteration of USS Sampson.
- He decided to rescue the survivors from JDS Myōkō rather than carrying on with the entire attack, surrendering to the alien spacecraft.
- He expressed remorse in several moments, such as losing to Japan in soccer, learning about getting kicked from the Navy after RIMPAC due to his behavioral problems, and after the first alien encounter to acknowledge his indirect cause to his brother's sacrifice and death.
- He initiated a lock-down on USS John Paul Jones after realizing the aliens are still on the ship despite saving a Gold Officer from human capture, and having a Regent Thug killed by Raikes via a Mk. 45 turret, the ship's main cannon.
- He allied with Captain Yugi Nagata to hunt down the Alien Skimmer and Archer spacecraft at night by utilizing tsunami buoys as references to their locations, destroying them immediately.
- In response to the aliens' attack on the destroyer, he urges the crew to reverse the ship to avoid the explosive pegs that would've impacted.
- He planned the counter-offensive against the last alien spaceship, the Striker.
- He shattered the light-filtering windows of the bridge with Captain Nagata by sniping them with an M82 Barrett, allowing the total disadvantage to the blinded Regent crew from winning, which was a thanks from Ordy's information.
- After the attack and an interrupted victorious ceremony, he ordered his team to evacuate the bridge upon discovering the two Shredder Drones potentially impacting and tearing the ship apart. Knowing that he can't stop the drones in time due to the weapon's slow response time and radar jamming.
- In one of the most famous action battle sequences of movie history, he usurped USS Missouri with the veterans to fire a salvo against the Regent Mothership, later being effective against the shields barricading Hawaii islands and the outside world, allowing Admiral Shane's USS Ronald Reagan's aircraft to intervene.
- With only one high-explosive round contained in USS Missouri, he delivered the shell to the working turret due to the back turret's critical incapacitation and assisted with lifting the thousand-pound round. He would later use the artillery to destroy the Project Beacon site in sacrifice to save the world and give up due to empty ammunition as the mothership's Shredder Drones were about to tear Mighty Mo.
- He owned up to Admiral Shane, asking him permission to marry his daughter and later asking him out for a chicken burrito.
- His actions of saving the world from total alien invasion and caring for his crew made him pass the admirable standards since Admiral Shane promoted him to Lieutenant Commander and awarded him the Silver Star and the Navy Cross Medal in tribute to his late brother.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He indirectly caused dozens of his allies' deaths, including his brother, who had to sacrifice himself to save him from the aliens. This prevention is too corruptible to place him in Pure Good or Near Pure Good due to how extremely reckless he is.
- He caused most of Captain Nagata's men's deaths at JDS Myōkō by deciding to attack the alien spacecraft for vengeance fully.
- He endangered his crew by attempting to collide with the alien spaceships, which was imperative had it not been for Beast to convince him enough about the survivors of Myōkō in the water.
- At the same time, he endangered humanity by interacting with the alien mothership's monument out of curiosity, even acknowledging the not-so-good idea from Beast and Raikes.
- He caused property damage to the convenience store and indirectly caused a commotion with police and several fender-benders on his way out, all for a burrito. Even if he paid the non-existent cashier for the burrito, he never paid for the extensive property damage anyway.
- He unwillingly joined the Navy because his brother told him to.
- While this may not benefit him near the admirable standards, this factor is eventually minor due to his accustomed leadership of saving the world and later taking an interest in the Navy himself.
- He threatened Bronson, his soccer teammate for trying to help the team by taking over the penalty kick.
- He quarreled with Captain Nagata for kicking him in the face during the soccer tournament, despite it being a complete accident.
