Adrian Shephard is the main protagonist of the Half-Life Expansion Pack Half-Life: Opposing Force.

He is a 22-year old HECU Marine and Corporal in the U.S.M.C. sent to Black Mesa in order to cover up the incident and push back the Xen invaders. After his V-22 Osprey crashes, however, he is separated from his unit and is forced to fend for himself against both inter-dimensional aliens and agents sent by the Central Intelligence Agency in order to leave no witnesses behind.

His Good Ranking[]

What Makes Him Admirable?[]

  • Although distrustful of each other, Shephard does spare and work with Black Mesa Science Personnel and Security Guards due to never being given orders to silence them which is contrasted by the many other HECU Marines who slaughter the Staff without remorse.
  • Even after finding out what his orders were from talking to scientists within the game, Shephard still refrains from killing them, likely feeling indebted after they saved his life.
  • Even though he is a part of the HECU, he he's shown no hate/animosity towards Gordon Freeman and in fact allowed him to enter Xen after seeing him in the Lambda Portal Room as he realized the Xenians, Race X and the Black Ops were bigger threats than him.
  • Genuinely cares about his fellow Marines, as he goes out of his way to save them multiple times at the risk of his own life.
  • Fights back against the CIA Black Operatives who have been sent to wipe out both the Black Mesa Staff and the HECU Marines, ultimately pushing them out.
  • Fights back against Race-X, an alien race who is attempting to conquer and terraform earth into an inhospitable world.
  • Disarms a Thermonuclear warhead planted by the Black Ops in an attempt to prevent the destruction of Black Mesa.
  • Kills the Gene Worm at the end of the game, ending the Race-X invasion once and for all.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • His main goal isn't to be heroic, but rather to escape the Black Mesa Research Facility, thus making him a hero-by-proxy.
  • He is an extremist since he makes use of multiple unpredictable experimental weapons and alien lifeforms (who are unwilling and still alive) for the sole purpose of fighting back against Race X and the Black Ops.
  • He is quite lethal to his enemies even if it's justified in self-defense.

Trivia[]

  • He is thus far the only Half-Life/Portal character to be Inconsistently Admirable.
